ABSTRACT

The handbook provides the basic information of the clinical, preventive, and social aspects for child health in tropical countries. It will be most useful to physicians oriented in temperate zone medicine and who find themselves treating children in the tropics. Due to the shortage of physicians, paramedical personnel (medical assistants, public health nurses, nurses, Peace Corps workers, and nurse midwives) will have to carry the large burden of providing medical care for the disproportionate child population in the tropical areas. They will find this book a welcome addition to their armamentarium. The handbook is intended to be a guide and to be supplemented by pediatric textbooks and journals. The organization of the text and the fine index facilitates easy reference and use. It is a "how to do" book and reflects Dr. Jelliffe's and his seven colleagues experience in the tropics, especially at Makerere Medical School in Kampala in the
