The problem of nephritis in the Balkan countries was reviewed by many invited speakers from Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Denmark, and London. The subject was approached from the role of epidemiology and genetics, with special studies of urinary proteins and structural and functional changes in this endemic nephropathy. Furthermore, the problem in Bosnia, Kolubara, Serbia, and Bulgaria was reviewed by the various research groups. A fascinating story on the role of nephrotoxic agents was also reviewed.
This peculiar chronic disease was first described approximately nine years ago in Rumania.
