THE AMERICAN PEDIATRIC SOCIETY has done me the greatest honor by presenting to me the John Howland Medal. My personal satisfaction is tremendous because your selection of me to receive this award is prophetic of the society's continuing interest in reaching out from the academic world of teaching and research to the practical world of community action where new knowledge is put to work in behalf of children. In fact as you honor me, you honor the scores and indeed thousands of people who have devoted themselves for many decades to improving the conditions of life for children in this country and the countries of the world.

I am indeed proud to be among those who have received this John Howland Award, and I am glad that I was one of his students now some 50 years ago, when he was in the middle of his career at Johns Hopkins.
