DR. GORDON, members and guests of the American Pediatric Society:

It is, as each of you know, a rare privilege to write a citation for a Howland medalist of the society for the effort brings one into silent communion with some of the great humanitarian and scientific leaders of our times. I doubt, however, if any previous winner of the citation ever put the composer in the predicament that Dr. Martha Eliot has put your speaker. Dr. Eliot has always eagerly sought fruitful innovations but has also shied away from personal praise. I suppose I should therefore not have been surprised to receive, early one Monday morning, a telephone call announcing, "Leona, I see you are composing my citation. Jointly we have 30 minutes. I will take 28. That will give you two minutes." But again, in typical Martha style, she was willing to negotiate if I did not talk
