ABSTRACT

Benirschke and Driscoll have compiled the book the world awaited, a major source of information on morphologic placentology. This book, originally published as part of the Henke-Lubarsch handbook of pathology, will serve as a major reference source for pediatricians, obstetricians, and pathologists for years to come. The classic nature of the work will become apparent as the placentology assumes its proper role in the many programs relating to infant and child care. Particularly, pediatricians will use the sections on the cord and vessels, multiple pregnancy, circulatory disturbances, infection, and hemolytic disease. This reviewer was a bit disappointed by the paucity of compiled mensurative data either alone or with respect to gestation. This minor deficiency is more than balanced by the assets of the volume. The price tab is commensurate with the value.
