The first edition of this excellent book was published in London (William Heineman, Ltd.) in 1961, and has, perhaps, not been as widely appreciated in the United States as it deserves to have been. Its introduction by an American publisher, in the second edition, should give it greater recognition on this side of the Atlantic. Both editions have been printed by Whitefriars Press, Ltd., in clear, readable type, and a much improved quality of paper has enhanced both the text and the illustrations.
Although certainly not intended to supplant the several more comprehensive works on pediatric surgery that have appeared during the last 10 or 12 years, it would be an error to suppose that this book is a digest or condensation of the subject.
