ABSTRACT

This book may be read with profit by pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, speech therapists, and parents. The major portion of the book is a mother's interesting description of the development of language by her daughter, a child who was born prematurely, and who had failed to develop language at the usual age. From the age of 4 years through age 11 years, the child received intensive tutoring by her mother, and regular speech therapy by a professional. In the course of these years the child's ability to understand and use speech improved, as did her ability to read.

The educational program utilized by the mother is presented, and observations are made regarding the role it played in the child's language development. Understandably it seems assumed that this program combined with professional assistance was essential to this child's language development. Considerable caution is required, however, to avoid the generalization that such a
