To the Editor: Comments such as those of Dr. Kuvin were indeed expected from our statement discouraging the use of talcum powder in infant care. It is analogous to revealing Santa Claus as a fraud—even though he is, we don't like to believe it. We are in complete agreement with Dr. Kuvin's initial statement that "the hazards of its (talc) use are well demonstrated."
We must emphasize that no medicinal effect has been demonstrated from this substance. Although talcum powder is somewhat absorbent, so is the diaper, and talc is an inferior substitute for a dry diaper. We are convinced that with proper hygiene of the diaper area, talc is not necessary.
