This fifth edition of a British textbook of general pediatrics is remarkably inclusive for its size. The descriptions, by necessity, are brief and superficial with a paucity of information on mechanisms. In the face of such brevity, it is disturbing to find such inequities as 44 pages devoted to tuberculosis while disorders of the blood are summarized in 22 pages, or eight pages regarding rickets in contrast to four pages discussing bacterial meningitis. Regrettably, references which might encourage a student to probe deeper are inadequate in number and scope. The outstanding feature of the book is the number and quality of its photographs which brilliantly depict both clinical states and gross anatomical pathology.
