This book is the third and considerably revised edition of a work originally issued by the same authors in 1951. It is designed primarily for future teachers and school nurses and aims to enable them to take full advantage of their unique opportunities in recognizing the health problems of their pupils and in educating their students in healthful living. The authors state two major objectives for their work, namely, (1) to supply that knowledge, drawn from physiology, psychology, bacteriology, medicine, and public health, needed to place health observation by school personnel on a firm and broad scientific basis, and (2) to acquaint teachers and other lay readers with the principal disorders and defects most commonly encountered during the school age and to report what is currently known about prevention, detection, and treatment.
