ABSTRACT

This small volume presents a composite of reviews and original work of which the first three contributions are of interest to the pediatrician. The first section (29 pages) is a brief review of the structure and function of the mature placenta. It is written in lucid form (German) and gathers advances made to about 1961. Its author is an experienced anatomist; consequently the structural aspect is best treated. It covers a survey of the development of the placenta, presents a diagram of its structure and reviews histochemical as well as fine structural details. Proper emphasis is placed on the plea to abandon the notion of an intervillous lake in favor of a capillary system. The site, size, and structure of the resorptive surface are discussed and an all too brief review of transfer is presented.
