To the Editor: By careful perusal of the above letter and my original article1 the interested reader will perceive many examples of Fischer fact fudging, such as these three:
Fischer's Fancy: "Ravenholt also ignores the fact that the proportion of bulbar poliomyelitis varies greatly from one epidemic and from one place to another."
Ravenholt's Fact1: "Of their patients, 38% had a history of tonsillectomy, compared with 50% in the present study. The proportion of paralytic patients with bulbar paralysis in their study (19%, Table 4) differs substantially from the proportion with bulbar paralysis in the Seattle outbreak (46%, Table 1)." At least five additional similar numerical comparisons of tonsillectomy and bulbar paralysis rates for each epidemic studied, with the Seattle rates, are presented in my article.
