To the Editor: The recent article (Amer J Dis Child 107:30, 1964) by Dr. Greenwald and Bashc, titled "An Epidemic of Erythema Infectiousum" was of interest, in that no causative agents in the patients studied were found. To my knowledge, no one has ever isolated a specific agent.
In May and June of 1963, in Washington, DC, we had a similar experience at the Walter Reed Army Hospital, however, in five of our ten patients studied, although we did not isolate agents from the stool or throat washings, we were able to demonstrate diagnostic titer rises to Coxsackie viruses of several types. Although I am not sure of the significance at this time, I think it would be of interest to other investigators to publish negative reports of various diagnostic studies.
