ABSTRACT

One of Those Children, by Elizabeth Neal, is a narrative by a British mother about her experiences in family and community life with a mentally retarded spastic son during his preschool and school years. Because the time of the story was during World War II, the author's husband was stationed in the service on the other side of the world and the family was forced by circumstances to live in makeshift temporary housing in small villages. Mrs. Neal was dependent on her own ingenuity for working out the environmental and educational problems she encountered with her handicapped son, Barry. He was slow to walk and had some neuromuscular handicap in one arm. His measurable intelligence quotient was first recorded in the 50's while later testing revealed that he was functioning in the high 70's.
