ABSTRACT

This is a simple straightforward book dealing with the diagnosis and management of surgical problems in childhood as they are managed in the office or in the emergency room. The material is well organized. The illustrations are large and clear, and the references are pertinent and up to date. Particularly useful is the section on the care of children with operatively created stomata, such as tracheostomy and ileostomy. The care of these artificial appertures is frequently neglected in other such treatises.

While the book is written with a great deal of common sense, the distinction between those problems which can be managed in an ambulatory fashion and those which require hospital admission is somewhat unclear. The book could have been considerably shorter had photographs and paragraphs devoted to major surgical problems been omitted.
