It is a well-documented socioeconomic fact that over a third of the world's population is underfed and that one of the most pressing problems of civilization would be to establish a nutritionally adequate food source for these millions of hungry people. Within narrower nutritional demands the need for an available source of acceptable protein would be the most pertinent specific problem. To this end an international conference made up of 79 of the world's recognized authorities in this field was held in August, 1960. It was held in Washington, D.C., under the combined auspices of the Committee on Protein Malnutrition, Food, and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council and that of the Nutrition Study Section of the National Institutes of Health.
