Interest, stimulus, and challenge derive from a visit to those in another country engaged in like tasks to your own, and there is much to be learned. As a Scottish pediatrician from a teaching hospital I recently paid a three months' visit to the United States of America. Ten academic centers involving 21 different hospitals were visited, mostly on the East Coast but also in Central and Western America, the time spent in each center ranging from two weeks to one day. A visit of this nature results in such a flow of information, experiences, comparisons, and questions as to make current analysis difficult and perspective hard to judge. However, having set down at the end of each day the experiences, thoughts, and information of the day there can now, after return, be a more considered appraisal.
