Pulmonary Hyaline-Membrane Disease in Hawaii FREE

Although a voluminous literature has been built up concerning pulmonary hyalinemembrane disease, few reports on this condition have come from far-Eastern countries. The paucity of such reports suggests that the incidence of the disorder might be influenced by climatic and racial factors. Since the population of the Hawaiian islands is largely of Oriental extraction and since almost all the population centers in the islands are situated near sea level and experience a relatively high humidity, this state would appear to be an ideal area in which to study the incidence of hyaline-membrane disease in Orientals delivered by American obstetrical practices and to compare this incidence with the frequency in Caucasians in the same hospital and with the reports of others in different parts of the United States.
