ABSTRACT

There are 2 points about the use of monkeys in investigation of measles vaccines. The first is for the control of the safety of the product, and the other is for the use of the monkey kidney cells for the growth of measles virus. For the first use, it is necessary to have monkeys that are free from antibodies to the measles virus. For the second purpose, it is perfectly satisfactory to have monkeys that contain antibodies, provided they are free from MINIA or measles viruses in the tissue culture system. Freedom from these viruses can be achieved by quarantine after arrival in the laboratory.

My interest in Cercopithecus monkeys has been chiefly in connection with testing for SV-40 in poliovirus preparations. But the lessons that have been learned in the procurement, the transportation, and the handling of monkeys that were first met with in this connection are in some
