Measles, with its high infectivity, simple and very effective way of spreading, and perfect postinfectious immunity, belongs to those infectious diseases in which it is obvious that active immunization is the only effective control method to be employed.
Recent works of Dr. John Enders and associates show how this important medical problem can be solved.
In recent years in the U.S.S.R., P. G. Sergiev,1 V. D. Soloviev,3 A. A. Smorodintsev,4 V. I. Ioffe,5 and the authors 2 have been working on the development of an effective and safe vaccine for active immunization against measles.
Most of the work is concerned with the investigation of live vaccines, and only V. D. Soloviev's laboratory prepares killed vaccine. We started our work with unsuccessful attempts to get a measles vaccine in chick embryo, but later we were encouraged by excellent work in this field done by Dr. John Enders.
