ABSTRACT

Mr. Alt's book, a description of his long experience in the residential treatment of emotionally disturbed children at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School, is a revelation to those persons who work in similar settings. The book is an overview of the author's long experience, wherein he utilizes specific situations regarding clinical treatment, administrative philosophy, and future planning to illustrate his own philosophic viewpoint.

Basically the book is divided into 3 parts. Part I is a detailed description of the evolution of a residential treatment program. Part II describes the broader aspects of community factors in planning residential treatment to meet the needs of the community. Part III consists of 3 well-written and detailed case reports from the school itself.

This book would be of invaluable aid to all psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, sociologists, and workers affiliated with juvenile courts and child care agencies, who involve themselves in residential treatment. One of
