Diabetes Mellitus or the Prediabetic State in the Mother and the Neonate Effect on the Homeostasis of Calcium, Phosphorus, and Some Other Electrolytes in the Neonate on the First Day of Life

In a previous publication we noted that the incidence of hypocalcemia on the first day of life was significantly higher in infants born to mothers who had abnormal pregnancies, labor, or both.1 In this group, diabetes mellitus in the mother played a prominent role.

We therefore investigated the incidence of hypocalcemia on the. first day of life in infants born to diabetic mothers and to mothers who were found to have a prediabetic state during pregnancy.* We also made simultaneous observations on some other constituents of the blood.

Patient Material and Methods  The infants were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of 22 infants born to diabetic mothers whose diabetic state had been recognized for periods varying between 1 and 18 years. All mothers of this group of infants received insulin, but no other hormones. All but two infants were delivered by cesarean section. Group II contained 36
