Characteristics of Heart Disease Seen in a Case-Finding Program FREE

Introduction  The purpose of this paper is to report the characteristics of heart disease observed in the course of a large-scale case-finding program for childhood heart disease in Colorado school children. A secondary purpose is the estimation of the accuracy of diagnosis resulting from a screening type of auscultatory examination of the heart in children. The methodology,1 preliminary findings as to prevalence,2 and the results of follow-up studies3 have been reported. A paper dealing with the relationship of heart disease prevalance to population characteristics4 is in preparation.Two groups of children were included in the study. The "regular" sample was made up of 11,236 children enrolled in the sixth grade of schools in 41 of Colorado's 63 counties. This group of children represents a random sample of sixth graders. The "extra" sample was composed of 1705 children who did not fall into the regular sample but
