ABSTRACT

Five presentations on different aspects of the psychological development of infants and children are included in this monograph, which appears in the same form as previous transactions of the Josiah Macy Jr., Foundation.

Dr. Emmy Sylvester presented a pediatrician's clinical observations of the undesirable effects of mechanized child-rearing practices without realistically appraising and meeting the individual needs of children. Overpermissiveness, overindulgence, and the tendency to theoretical generalizations by those who give advice regarding child-rearing practices to parents were particularly condemned.

Dr. John Bowlby, a psychiatrist from England, presented the results of systematic observations on the effect of separation of children between 1 and 3 years of age. This study resulted in the production of the film, "A Two Year Old Goes to the Hospital."
