Dr. Emmy Sylvester presented a pediatrician's clinical observations of the undesirable effects of mechanized child-rearing practices without realistically appraising and meeting the individual needs of children. Overpermissiveness, overindulgence, and the tendency to theoretical generalizations by those who give advice regarding child-rearing practices to parents were particularly condemned.
Dr. John Bowlby, a psychiatrist from England, presented the results of systematic observations on the effect of separation of children between 1 and 3 years of age. This study resulted in the production of the film, "A Two Year Old Goes to the Hospital." The ability of infants and very young children to use their resources as autoerotic behavior, play activity, and relationships with hospital personnel to maintain an emotional
