Everyone interested in the health of the school child recognizes the fact that the teacher, who is in close contact with children for one-third of their waking hours during 12 of their most formative years, is in a key position to make day-to-day observations of their growth and development and of the state of their health. The fact that most teachers are not adequately trained in health observation has been a weak spot in the effective utilization of the services of physicians, nurses, and other professional persons available for the maintenance and improvement of the health of the school child. An authoritative and comprehensive book such as this one, which offers basic and thorough training in health observation to any intelligent and alert lay person, is long overdue.
