The components of human milk which are investigated in this report are the fats and the nonfat solids, vitamin A and the carotenoids, vitamins C, D, Bi, and riboflavin. The samples, except when otherwise stated for special purposes, consisted of the whole milking from one breast four to six hours after it was previously emptied. The details of collection and analysis are given, and the tables giving results state the number of samples used for each mean value.
The main study was on the milk of mothers from two areas: one, a prosperous country town, Reading, and the other, a crowded part of London, Shoreditch, during the war years, 1942 to 1945.
