This is a study, written in Spanish, of the nutrition of Costa Rican children. The author gives a summary of the diets in various parts of Costa Rica with food values and costs. The nutritional problem is economic and educational. Fifty per cent of the instances of nutritional deficiencies come from homes with very low incomes. The main deficiency is in protein. The author is of the opinion that this may be overcome by adding soy bean protein, which is adequate in content and cheap in price. Most frequently the disturbances come in the group 1 to 4 years of age and are due to lack of proper food and parasitic infection.
This is an interesting study for anyone interested in diets of children in this area. The study is well done.
