The purpose of our work was the determination of the nonprotein nitrogen of the blood of infants, particularly of infants suffering from disorders of nutrition of the severer types. The blood was taken in quantities of 3 to 5 c.c. from the longitudinal sinus, following the directions of Helmholz.1 The poor condition of most of our atrophic infants was the reason for taking as small quantities of blood as possible. In most of the cases the total nonprotein nitrogen and the urea nitrogen were determined, the former according to the method of Folin and Denis,2 the latter by the Van Slyke and Cullen3 modification of Marshall's4 method. The portion of the alcoholic filtrate of the blood which is used for the determination of the urea nitrogen must be taken before the addition of zinc chlorid, because this substance interferes with the urease action.
