The original experiments detailed in this paper were undertaken for the purpose of determining whether a child fed on relatively high protein food was able to absorb large quantities of nitrogen and to what extent it retained and utilized such food element in building up its tissues.
From among the large number of infants in Bellevue Hospital who were fed on protein milk one was chosen as being a typical case for which protein milk was indicated. This child was brought to the hospital because of diarrhea and loss of weight. He was 7 months old and weighed 12 pounds on admission. Previous to admission he had been having from eight to ten watery stools daily and was rapidly losing weight. Four days previous to the beginning of the metabolism experiment he was fed on protein milk, which contained protein 2.8 per cent., carbohydrate 2.4 per cent., fat.8 per cent.
