ABSTRACT

This little book contains many needed principles and much practical information concerning breast feeding, which in America, in many quarters, has become a lost art. Most outstanding is the chapter on the "Mind of the Mother." The author, herself a mother of five children and a physician of experience, writes convincingly of the mental change a woman experiences after childbirth: how she is incapable of making decisions and is subject to the loudest and strongest arguments in regard to breast feeding.

The ill advised early use of formulas in hospitals and the almost universal impatience with breast feeding in those infants who do not take to it in the first four days are discussed. Nurses should be taught that feedings during the first four days are only practice. There should be a period of about two hours each day when the baby may lie with the mother. Sound reasons are
