This volume is the report of a conference on muscular contraction held by the section of biology and the section of physics and chemistry of the New York Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15 and 16, 1946, at the American Museum of Natural History, New York city.
Alexander Sandow states in the introduction to the conference: "Here we find studies of structure: gross, microscopic and, especially today, ultramicroscopic, and of function in its many subdivisions, such as permeability, metabolism in all its chemical and thermodynamic aspects, bioelectricity, secretion... and, of course, above all,... contractility itself."
