FROM 1921 to 1946, 1,108 cases of acute poliomyelitis were diagnosed and the patients treated at the South View Hospital of the Milwaukee Health Department. Of these cases, death occurred in 102.
In August 1946, an 8 year old boy was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of acute bulbar poliomyelitis. His past history showed a period of hospitalization at South View Hospital one year previously for acute spinal poliomyelitis. We wish to add this case to the medical literature as an instance of recurrence in this disease. The literature includes reports of 35 cases of recurrent poliomyelitis. A review of these cases shows that approximately 45 per cent have been considered doubtful.
