Emphysema of a portion of the pulmonary tree has been noted and its pathogenesis discussed by many observers. Schenk1 ascribed to Bartholinus the first description of cystic lung published in 1687, but he did not state whether the condition was emphysematous. Kountz and Alexander2 credited Laënnec with having originated, in 1819, the idea of partial bronchial obstruction as a factor in the production of emphysema. Localized emphysema is often associated with cystic disease of the lung, and the two conditions are frequently discussed together. The first case discussed by Meyer,3 in 1856, was an instance of cystic disease associated with emphysema of the upper lobe of the left lung. Many others have reported the two conditions as occurring simultaneously.
