For the last twenty-five years the basal metabolic rate of the normal child has been elaborately studied in numerous laboratories and clinics. Though the results of the various workers still show considerable divergence, the differences have markedly diminished in the investigations of recent years. Thus the results of Lewis, Kinsman and Iliff1 show a striking correspondence with those of Bierring2 and with mine. For an exhaustive review of the literature on the basal metabolic rate of the normal child, the reader is referred to the recent work of Lewis and his collaborators.1

The question of how to interpret the basal metabolic rates of children with abnormal bodily dimensions has not yet been satisfactorily answered. Among these children one must consider those with too large or too small a weight for their height and well proportioned children who are much too tall or too short for their age.
