ABSTRACT

RESEARCH ON SLEEP  In 1924 the Simmons Fellowship was founded at Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, University of Pittsburgh, to carry on a broad study of problems in the promotion and maintenance of healthful sleep. Dr. H. M. Johnson and Mr. G. E. Weigand, psychologists, and Dr. T. H. Swan, physical chemist, have been conducting this research during the past year. Recently, Dr. Carney Landis, physiologist, has temporarily joined the personnel of the investigation. It is announced that from now on there will be two separate Simmons Fellowships at Mellon Institute. One of them will continue the research on the physiologic and psychologic factors of sleep under the supervision of Dr. Johnson. The other Fellowship, held by Dr. Swan, will be concerned chiefly with the subject of bedding materials. This investigational work is being supported primarily for the benefit of the public, and consequently the experimental results will be published.
