The presence of diphtheria in civilized communities constitutes an important hygienic problem. It shows the need for a practical and efficient method of active immunization, that will protect the child and adult population. Such protection should be applied early in life, so that an efficient active immunity will be produced during that period when the individuals are most susceptible and the disease causes the greatest mortality; that is, from 1 to 5 years of age.
